Instant Username Search was born from a late-night coding session during a university hackathon that changed everything.
It was 2023, and our team of four computer science students at MIT had 48 hours to build something meaningful. While others were creating the next food delivery app or social network clone, we noticed something different - our friend Sarah, a digital marketing major, was spending hours manually checking username availability across platforms for her startup clients.
"There has to be a better way," she said, frustrated after discovering that 'TechFlow' was taken on Instagram but available everywhere else. That's when inspiration struck. What if we could check all platforms simultaneously? What seemed impossible at 2 AM became our obsession.
Armed with energy drinks and determination, we reverse-engineered dozens of platform APIs, built a lightning-fast backend, and created the smoothest user interface we could imagine. By Sunday morning, we had a working prototype that could check 25 platforms in under 3 seconds.
The hackathon judges were blown away. We won first place, and more importantly, Sarah's startup clients were our first users. Word spread quickly through the entrepreneurship community, then to influencers, then to everyday users who just wanted a consistent online identity.
